Barış Özbaykal is the founder of Peace & Sails and one of the partners of Fethiye-based Bella Yachting. He started sailing in 1992 on the Turkish Naval Academy sailing team, then served 25 years in the Turkish Navy from 1992 to 2017, commanding ships of various types and tonnages.
Since 2020 he has delivered catamarans, sailboats and motor yachts from France's Bay of Biscay coast and ports across the Mediterranean. He holds the International Yacht Training (IYT) Yachtmaster Offshore Sail certificate and has sailed more than 200,000 nautical miles over 100+ passages.
Barış Özbaykal's life at sea began in 1992 on the sailing team of the Turkish Naval Academy. The same year he began his service in the Turkish Navy, where he spent 25 years at sea until 2017.
During that time he commanded ships of various types and tonnages. The habits of naval seamanship he built there, from passage planning and watchkeeping to night navigation and collision avoidance, are the principles he still sails by today.
Since 2020 he has delivered catamarans, sailboats and motor yachts from France's Bay of Biscay coast and from ports across the Mediterranean.
His longest delivery so far brought a Bali catamaran from La Rochelle on the Bay of Biscay across Biscay, down the Iberian coast and through the Strait of Gibraltar to Marmaris.

Barış Özbaykal founded Peace & Sails to spend more time at sea and to pass on what he has learned over the years. The routes and guides in the Sailing Experience section grew out of that experience.
For him, what matters most on a sailboat is not the destination but the passage itself: “Being under way on a sailboat is worth more than arriving.”
